Pierre Martins arranged a weekend away from 31 July to 3 August 2015.

This was to be a joint event with some Porsche enthusiasts from Jozi and our club.

Tania and I, Charlie , Sagren and Esmy however only drove up on the Saturday.

We met at the Cato Ridge BP just after 05h30 and arrived at Cathedral Peak in time to join the group for breakfast.

After breakfast we all drove through Winterton to the Berg Canopy Tour.

We were all chatting in the carpark and discussing the various cars when our man Charlie opened his bonnet and produced a few beers – this was the turning point! – and everyone was now at ease and we were buddies for life – linked by more than just Porsches.

And then one of the Jozi gang produced a bottle of Port – no glasses needed!

I didn’t do the tour as I wanted to ensure I had no mishaps before leaving for Russia on Thursday 6 August for the World Masters Swimming Champs – had I known then what I now know I would have done all the rides and taken part in the other excesses that presented themselves over the weekend!

Those who did not do the canopy tour took a short hike to the nearby hotel and enjoyed a few beverages on the deck overlooking the mountain. The conversation revolved around the great music of our youth and it was very entertaining and nostalgic.

The late lunch was held at a Portuguese restaurant called the Black Scabbard. The food was good and plentiful and so were the drinks! The proprietor does however charge like a wounded buffalo!

The conversation flowed faster than the drinks were poured and many a good laugh was had.

When we started getting cold we deciided to attack the 1 hour ride back to the hotel. We first had to descend upon the fuel station in Winterton and definitely gave the locals something to talk about for the next few dinner parties/braais.

It was not such a bright idea to travel back after dark as the locals consume way too much alcohol and then walk in the middle of the road – lets simply say that the trip back was entertaining.

Once back at the hotel we all gathered in the Boma to enjoy a braai that was put on for our benefit and to continue theinteresting  conversations that were cut short earlier.

The KZN gang left after the Sunday breakfast and the du Toit’s and Krogs stopped in the midlands for lunch. The restaurant , food and views were stunning – we just needed more club members there!!!

I am almost 100% sure than Tania and I will be joining Pierre and his group on the 2016 weekend away – will you be joining us?
